Small but Mighty: Behind the Scenes

Our latest microstory Small But Mighty: Conservation lessons from a community in Kinabatangan began with a visit to the headquarters of Our Better World, a local non-profit digital storytelling studio started by the Singapore International Foundation, which highlights stories of global communities doing good. There, they introduced us to the work of HUTAN, an environmental research and conservation NGO that focuses on protecting the biodiversity and communities within the Kinabatangan region. Our Better World was writing a longform story about the people and wildlife of the region, where widespread deforestation over decades has brought animals in much closer contact with humans than ever before. Their article follows the villagers who are part of HUTAN and the good work they’ve done over the years, monitoring the wildlife and planting trees for forest corridors to allow more space for the animals to roam, while lessening the risk of them encroaching into human-populated areas.
